Virginia Hollis, 8, Returned to Hometown for Final Tribute After Deadly Camp Mystic Floods
BELLVILLE, TX — The small town of Bellville is enveloped in sorrow as it honors the life of Virginia Hollis, an 8-year-old girl who tragically lost her life during the catastrophic floods that swept through Camp Mystic in the Texas Hill Country. Today, law enforcement officials escorted Virginia’s body back to her hometown, where a heartfelt procession allowed friends, family, and neighbors to pay their respects.
The procession traveled through Bellville’s Town Square, giving residents the chance to come together in mourning and support. It passed by Faith Academy, where Virginia was a student, before concluding at Schmidt Funeral Home.
A Bright Light Taken Too Soon
Virginia was described by those who knew her as a joyful and kind-hearted child whose laughter and spirit touched everyone she met. She was a camper at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp nestled near the Guadalupe River, where she spent her days learning, exploring, and making lifelong memories.
Her love for life extended beyond the camp. At Faith Academy, Virginia was known as a bright and eager student who enjoyed her studies and the friendships she built. Her family remembers her as curious and loving, a child with a bright future now tragically cut short.
The Tragedy That Shook the Community
The floods struck unexpectedly after an intense storm dumped more than 12 inches of rain in a short span. The Guadalupe River rose rapidly, overflowing its banks and flooding Camp Mystic, catching campers and staff off guard. Despite efforts to evacuate, the sudden surge of water left little time for many to escape.
Virginia was among 28 people who died in the disaster, one of the deadliest flood events in Texas history. The tragedy has left families devastated and communities searching for ways to heal.
Community Response and Support
In the wake of the disaster, Bellville’s residents have rallied together. Vigils and memorials have been held in Virginia’s honor, and residents have tied green ribbons—the color symbolizing Camp Mystic—to trees and lampposts around town as a sign of remembrance.
Local officials, school leaders, and residents alike have expressed their condolences and commitment to support the families affected. “We grieve with the Hollis family and all those impacted by this unimaginable loss,” said a Bellville community leader. “Virginia’s memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew her.”
Moving Forward with Hope
As Bellville mourns, the focus remains on healing and remembrance. The community’s strength is reflected in the outpouring of love and support, underscoring the deep bonds that hold the town together even in its darkest hours.
Virginia’s family has asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time but expressed gratitude for the compassion and prayers from across the region.
