A tragic head-on collision on a rural stretch of Knabe Road in Temescal Valley has claimed the lives of 44-year-old Vickie Larsen Hultstrand and 41-year-old motorcyclist John Teply, leaving a community in mourning and two families shattered.
Crash Details and Sequence of Events
Authorities report that Vickie Larsen Hultstrand was driving her Tesla with her children inside when a motorcycle, ridden by John Teply, was traveling southbound on Knabe Road at a high rate of speed and driving erratically.
Teply crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with Vickie’s vehicle. The force of the crash was so severe that the motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and landed inside the Tesla’s cabin, reportedly in Vickie’s lap.
Miraculously, Vickie’s children survived the accident with only minor injuries and were treated at the scene. They did not require hospitalization.
Victims and Survivors
Both Vickie Larsen Hultstrand and John Teply were pronounced dead at the scene.
Vickie is survived by her husband, Ben Hult, and her children. A proud graduate of California State University, Fullerton, she was known for her warmth, kindness, and dedication to her family.
John Teply, the motorcyclist and second victim in the crash, was 41 years old. Further personal details about Teply have not been released.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Firefighters and paramedics from Cal Fire Riverside, Corona Fire Department, and Riverside County Fire Department arrived promptly to rescue the children and extinguish a small fire sparked by the crash.
The children were assessed on-site for minor injuries and safely released to family members.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) continues its investigation into the cause of the collision. Early indications suggest excessive speed and reckless driving by the motorcyclist were contributing factors.
