Traverse City Walmart Stabbing: 11 Injured, Suspect Identified as Afton Man With Criminal Past
TRAVERSE CITY, MI — July 27, 2025 — A routine afternoon shopping trip turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed Saturday evening when a man armed with a folding knife carried out a random mass stabbing at a Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City. Authorities have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Bradford James Gille of Afton, Michigan.
The violent rampage injured at least 11 people, including elderly victims in their 80s. Several remain in critical condition.
According to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael D. Shea, Gille acted alone in what officials are calling a premeditated but indiscriminate attack. The suspect was taken into custody after being subdued by courageous civilians—two of whom are being hailed as heroes.
Chaos Erupts at Crossing Circle Walmart
The assault began at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, when Gille allegedly entered the Walmart located on Crossing Circle armed with a folding knife. Without warning or provocation, he began stabbing customers in multiple departments.
Victims were found in various locations throughout the store, including the pharmacy, produce section, and near checkout lines. Eyewitnesses reported panic and confusion as shoppers screamed and fled in all directions, many leaving behind carts and personal belongings.
Munson Healthcare later confirmed that 11 individuals were transported to area hospitals. At the time of reporting, five were listed in serious condition, and six remain in critical condition. Some victims suffered wounds to the face, chest, and neck, and at least two went into cardiac arrest on-site.
Civilians Step Up to Stop the Attack
Though the attack was sudden and terrifying, it was the quick actions of armed and unarmed civilians that likely prevented a greater tragedy.
Among the first to respond was Derrick Perry, a legally armed customer and concealed carry permit holder. Perry drew his weapon and confronted Gille, creating a diversion that allowed others to intervene.
Another bystander, Matthew K., a Marine Corps veteran from Kent City, was shopping with his daughter when he saw the suspect stab an elderly woman. Acting on instinct, Matthew ushered his daughter to safety before grabbing a nearby shopping cart and slamming it into Gille’s leg, knocking him off balance.
As Gille fell forward, another Marine veteran—who has not been publicly identified—held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. The suspect was subdued just outside the store and taken into custody without further incident.
Body camera footage and civilian videos captured the dramatic takedown, which has since circulated online, drawing national attention and praise for the civilians’ bravery.
Investigation Expands, FBI Joins Case
The FBI has joined the investigation, working alongside local police and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office. Charges against Gille are expected to include multiple counts of assault with intent to murder, and authorities are reviewing whether terrorism enhancements could be applied.
Sheriff Shea confirmed that Gille has a prior criminal record, including convictions for assaultive behavior and controlled substance violations. Officials say more details about his motive and background will be released in the coming days.
The attack appears to have been random. “We have no indication at this time that he knew any of the victims,” said Shea in a press briefing Sunday. “We are very confident we have the correct suspect in custody.”
Community Rallies Around Victims
As news of the stabbing spread, Traverse City residents flooded social media with prayers and support. Many expressed shock that such violence could unfold in their quiet Northern Michigan town.
Family members of victims have spoken publicly to thank both the medical teams and the civilians who stepped in. “She’s one of the lucky ones and will recover,” wrote one woman on Facebook, referring to her elderly aunt, who was slashed in the throat but survived thanks to emergency tourniquet treatment at the scene.
Walmart released a statement offering condolences to the victims and gratitude to those who intervened. “Our hearts go out to those injured, their families, and all affected. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement.”
No Ongoing Threat, But Questions Remain
Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community, and the Walmart location remains closed as investigators process the scene. Extra security is being deployed at area stores, and law enforcement is asking any witnesses who may have fled the scene to contact them.
“We want to hear from everyone who saw something or has footage,” said Sheriff Shea. “Every detail matters in building this case and securing justice for the victims.”
The investigation remains active and ongoing, with updates expected later this week.
