Toledo Police Identify Man Killed in Overnight Shooting; Second Victim Hurt

TOLEDO, Ohio (August 9, 2025) — The Toledo Police Department is investigating a deadly overnight shooting that claimed the life of a 31-year-old man and left another person injured in central Toledo.

Authorities say officers were dispatched just after 1:00 a.m. Saturday to the 630 block of East Central Avenue following reports of gunfire. When police arrived, they found Leonel Avila Rodriguez suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite emergency efforts, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second victim, whose identity has not been released, sustained minor injuries during the incident. That individual received medical attention and is expected to recover.

Investigation Underway

Detectives spent hours at the scene gathering evidence, marking bullet casings, and interviewing potential witnesses. Police have not released details about what may have led to the shooting and have not identified any suspects at this time.

The Toledo Police Department is urging anyone with information—no matter how small it may seem—to contact Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and authorities say community cooperation will be critical in solving this case.

Community Impact

The deadly shooting has left residents in the East Central Avenue neighborhood shaken. Some neighbors reported being awakened by the sound of multiple gunshots, while others described a growing concern over safety in the area.

“This is heartbreaking,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified. “We hear about shootings all the time, but when it happens this close to home, it really hits you.”

Rodriguez’s death adds to the city’s rising number of violent crime cases in 2025. Toledo police and city leaders have been working with local organizations to address the roots of gun violence, but Saturday’s killing underscores the challenges that remain.

Remembering the Victim

While police continue their investigation, friends and family of Leonel Avila Rodriguez are mourning his loss. Social media posts described him as a hardworking man who cared deeply for his loved ones. Many have called for justice and expressed hope that his killer will be found quickly.

Looking Ahead

The Toledo Police Department has increased patrols in the area and continues to canvass for surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses. Investigators are also examining whether this shooting is connected to any other recent incidents in the city.

Anyone with tips is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers or submit information through the department’s online portal.

“We need the community’s help to bring closure to this family,” said a police spokesperson. “If you saw or heard something, please speak up.”
