Community Mourns the Loss of David “Punkin” Stone Jr., Beloved Tribal Member and Artist
ODANAH, WI — The Bad River community is deeply saddened by the passing of David A. “Punkin” (Niibinobines) Stone Jr., who died on July 16, 2025, shortly before his 55th birthday. Known for his artistic talent, strong connection to his Native heritage, and dedication to his family, David leaves behind a lasting legacy in Odanah and beyond.
Born on July 26, 1970, in St. Paul, Minnesota, David was the son of David Stone Sr. and Jeannine Stone. He was raised with a deep appreciation for his tribal roots and community values. Throughout his life, he worked in various roles supporting the Bad River tribe, including as a driver for Bad River Transit, providing vital services to tribal members.
David was also a gifted tattoo artist, a profession he pursued with passion for many years. His art was more than just ink—it was a cultural expression and a way to connect with others, honoring stories and traditions through his craft.
Outside of his professional life, David enjoyed the outdoors and cherished spending time with his family. He loved hunting, fishing, and ricing, activities that not only connected him to nature but also to the cultural practices of his people. Friends and family remember him fondly for his love of gambling and the joy he found in being surrounded by those he cared about most.
David is survived by his partner, Lana Olby; his father, David Stone Sr.; and his children: Alyssa Stone, David Alan Stone III “Sonny Boy,” Lucia Agostine, Detrea Lemieux, Marissa Lemieux, Adina Agostine, Michelle Lemieux, Rylan Stone, Cashton Ford, and Aughna Cadotte. His grandchildren—Karli, Marely Lael, Aurelio, Kaniya, Lydia, Adrien, and Adam—carry forward his spirit and love.
He is also survived by his siblings Tanya Stone, Robert Powless III, Shanna Powless, Victor Stone, Tyrone Stone, Shannon Butler, and Jessica Stone, as well as extended family and friends who cherished his kindness and generosity.
David was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannine Stone; brother Steven Stone; sister Myna Stone; and niece Cheyenne Powless.
Traditional funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Bad River Community Center in Odanah. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the same location. Burial will follow at the Odanah Cemetery.
David “Punkin” Stone Jr. was a pillar of his community, a devoted family man, and an artist who made a lasting impression on those around him. His memory will be honored and cherished by all who had the privilege to know him.
