DANVILLE, Va. โ July 30, 2025
In a horrifying act that has stunned the city of Danville and reverberated across the state, City Councilman Lee Vogler was critically injured Wednesday after being deliberately set on fire in what authorities describe as a targeted, personal attack.
The brazen assault unfolded just before noon in the 700 block of Main Street, drawing a massive response from police, fire personnel, and emergency medical crews.
ย A Targeted and Calculated Attack
According to the Danville Police Department, the suspectโnow in custodyโentered Councilman Voglerโs workplace, confronted him directly, and poured a flammable liquid over his body. The confrontation spilled outside, where the suspect ignited the substance, setting Vogler on fire in full view of multiple witnesses.
Emergency responders from the Danville Fire Department and Danville Life Saving Crew arrived within minutes. Vogler was stabilized and airlifted by helicopter to a regional trauma center, where he remains in critical condition.
โThis was a deliberate and deeply disturbing act of violence,โ said Danville Police Chief Chris Wiles during an afternoon press briefing. โWe believe this was a personal dispute, not related to Councilman Voglerโs role in public office.โ
ย Arrest Made Minutes Later
Thanks to eyewitness descriptions, police quickly located the suspectโs vehicle just blocks away. Officers conducted a high-risk stop and took the suspect into custody without incident.
The assailant has been identified as 29-year-old Shotsie Hayes. Authorities confirmed that Hayes has been formally charged, though the specific charges have not yet been publicly released. He remains in police custody as investigators work to establish a full motive.

The Danville community has responded with a mix of grief, outrage, and disbelief.
โThis is not just an attack on a public officialโitโs an attack on our entire city,โ said Mayor Alonzo Jones. โWe are praying for Leeโs recovery and standing with his family during this unimaginable time.โ
Investigation Ongoing
The crime scene remained sealed off late into Wednesday evening as investigators collected forensic evidence and reviewed nearby surveillance footage. Police say they are continuing to interview witnesses and do not believe there are any additional suspects at this time.
Authorities are asking anyone with firsthand information or digital evidence from the scene to contact the Danville Police Departmentโs Criminal Investigations Division.
