MIDLAND, TX — July 27, 2025 — The Midland community is in mourning following a tragic head-on collision over the weekend that claimed the life of Henry “Crickett” Vela, a well-known local figure. The crash, which involved wrong-way driving and resulted in a fiery impact, also led to the death of the other motorist involved.

According to family members, Vela was driving when the vehicle went the wrong way on the highway, resulting in the devastating collision. The force of the crash caused the vehicle to catch fire, and emergency responders arrived promptly but were unable to save either driver.

In a somber statement, Vela’s spouse shared details of the accident and the immediate impact on their family.

“My husband was driving the wrong way when the head-on collision happened. The vehicle caught fire, and both drivers passed away. He is currently awaiting autopsy results and will not be released until Tuesday afternoon. We are unable to hold a viewing at this time. Right now, I am focused on safely getting to Midland with our children,” she said.
