Indiana State University Mourns the Loss of Football Player Edward Amankwah, 22

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Indiana State University community is in mourning following the tragic passing of 22-year-old student-athlete Edward Amankwah, a beloved member of the Sycamore football team and a respected young leader both on and off the field. His death was confirmed by the university on Thursday morning, sending shockwaves through campus and beyond.

“We’re heartbroken over Edward’s passing, and our hearts go out to the Amankwah family and all of his loved ones,” said Head Coach Curt Mallory. “He was a quality young man who brought light into every room and left a lasting impact on his teammates, our coaching staff, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.”

The university clarified that Amankwah’s passing was not related to any athletic activities, and out of respect for the family’s wishes, no additional details regarding the circumstances of his death are being released at this time.

A Rising Star On and Off the Field

A redshirt freshman defensive back from Tinley Park, Illinois, Amankwah was preparing for what would have been his final season with the Sycamore football program. Known for his relentless work ethic, quiet leadership, and infectious positivity, Edward was a respected figure in the locker room and on the field.

Off the field, Amankwah had already earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training and had returned to ISU to pursue a graduate degree, demonstrating a deep commitment to both academics and personal growth.

“Edward carried himself with humility and heart, and we are better as a department because he was part of it,” said Athletic Director Nathan Christensen. “He was more than a student-athlete—he was a friend, a leader, and a deeply valued member of our community.”

Community in Mourning

The news has deeply affected teammates, faculty, and fellow students who describe Amankwah as a kind soul with a passion for service, football, and mentoring others.

“Our Sycamore Family is devastated by the loss of Edward Amankwah,” Christensen added. “His presence inspired others to be their best selves.”

Indiana State University President Mike Godard also expressed his condolences and spoke about the importance of unity in the face of such a heartbreaking loss.

“Edward embodied the spirit of our university—resilient, kind, and full of promise,” Godard said. “His sudden passing leaves a void in our Sycamore Family, and our hearts are heavy for all who knew and loved him. At Indiana State, our culture of care means standing together in grief, supporting one another, and honoring the life and legacy of those we’ve lost.”

A Lasting Legacy

As tributes pour in from across the ISU community and the wider collegiate athletics world, plans are underway to honor Edward Amankwah’s life and legacy in the coming days. Details regarding memorial services or tributes have not yet been announced.

Edward is remembered not only as an outstanding athlete but as a beacon of positivity, leadership, and resilience.
