Terror Strikes Midtown: 6 Shot, 4 Killed in Manhattan High-Rise—Gunman Identified as Shane Tamura, FBI Takes Lead
NEW YORK CITY — July 28, 2025 — A peaceful summer evening in the heart of Manhattan was shattered by a horrifying act of violence when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise building at 345 Park Avenue, leaving six people shot and at least four dead, including a New York Police Department officer.
The shooter, now identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the skyscraper just before 6:30 p.m., armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing body armor. Authorities say he moved with purpose, bypassing lower floors before opening fire in the lobby and ascending to the upper levels, where he later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Shooter: Shane Devon Tamura
According to law enforcement officials, Shane Tamura had traveled from Las Vegas to New York in the days leading up to the attack. Surveillance video shows him walking calmly into the building’s main entrance carrying a rifle and duffel bag, wearing dark clothing and tactical gear.
Tamura reportedly held a valid concealed-carry permit from Nevada and had no known felony record. Investigators are now scouring his digital history, including travel logs, personal communications, and social media activity to determine a motive.
“At this time, we have no clear indication of what drove Tamura to carry out this act,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “We are working with our federal partners to uncover every piece of the puzzle.”
Victims and Casualties
Police confirmed that four individuals were killed, among them a uniformed NYPD officer assigned to a private security detail inside the building. At least two other people are in critical condition at area hospitals. Others sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and initial panic.
The names of the victims have not yet been released pending family notifications. A Family Assistance Center has been set up for those with loved ones who may have been in the building at the time of the shooting.
Scene of the Crime: 345 Park Avenue
The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan that houses high-profile tenants such as Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and NFL headquarters. The building was immediately placed on lockdown as tactical units from the NYPD Emergency Services Unit and the FBI’s New York Field Office responded.
Eyewitnesses described chaos as workers fled down stairwells, locked themselves in conference rooms, or sought shelter behind furniture.
“There were screams, people running, the sound of gunshots echoing up through the atrium,” said an employee on the 29th floor. “We didn’t know if we were going to make it out.”
Gunman Dead, Building Secured
Law enforcement teams conducted a floor-by-floor sweep of the building. Tamura was found deceased in a stairwell between the 32nd and 33rd floors, along with his weapon and tactical equipment.
Commissioner Tisch confirmed by 8:30 p.m. that the “lone shooter has been neutralized,” and that the building had been declared secure. However, investigators remained on scene overnight to collect evidence and interview dozens of witnesses.
FBI, ATF, and JTTF Join Investigation
Due to the nature of the shooting—assault weapon, tactical vest, high-profile target—the FBI, ATF, and Joint Terrorism Task Force have assumed joint control of the investigation. While terrorism has not been ruled out, officials currently believe the attack was carried out by a single individual with unknown motives.
Agents executed a search warrant at Tamura’s apartment in Las Vegas and are tracing the origin of his weapons and travel arrangements.
Response from Officials
Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul issued statements condemning the attack and praising first responders for their courage and swift action.
“This was a deliberate, calculated act of violence that took the lives of innocent people,” said Mayor Adams. “New York City will not bow to fear, and we will ensure justice is served.”
