MEMPHIS, TN — A Memphis family is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Taquirney Fifer, a devoted mother of three, who was fatally shot at an apartment complex Wednesday night under circumstances that have quickly sparked suspicion and outrage.

The 911 call came from a residence in a South Memphis apartment complex late Wednesday evening. When deputies arrived, they found Fifer critically wounded by a gunshot. Life-saving efforts were made at the scene, but tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to initial reports, her boyfriend, identified as Wittit Gee, claimed that Fifer had taken her own life. However, that version of events is now being heavily questioned by both law enforcement officials and Fifer’s family, who insist that what happened was not self-inflicted.

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene for questioning, including Gee. While police have not formally announced charges as of Thursday, investigators reportedly told relatives that Gee’s account of the incident was inconsistent and raised significant doubts.

“The police said his story doesn’t add up,” a close family member posted on social media Thursday morning. “We want justice for Taquirney. She didn’t do this to herself.”

Fifer’s loved ones have described her as a woman full of life and resilience—a devoted mother who worked hard to provide for her three children. Her death has sent shockwaves through her community, many of whom are now demanding transparency and accountability in the investigation.

“Taquirney was a bright spirit,” said a cousin who asked not to be named publicly. “She had her struggles like anyone else, but she loved her children more than anything. She would never leave them like this.”

As the investigation continues, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has remained tight-lipped on further details, citing the ongoing nature of the case. However, growing public attention and family statements have intensified pressure on authorities to act swiftly.

Family and friends have taken to social media, sharing memories, photos, and calls for justice. One friend wrote, “She had plans. She had babies. This was not her choice. We need the truth.”

Neighbors in the apartment complex reported hearing arguing prior to the gunshot. Others said they had seen police at the residence before, indicating a possible history of domestic issues, though no official reports have confirmed this.

Domestic violence advocates say the case, while still developing, raises critical questions about the signs of abuse and the urgency of protecting vulnerable women in dangerous situations.

“Too often, women are silenced before anyone has the chance to intervene,” said one advocate at a local women’s shelter. “Taquirney’s story—whatever the full truth turns out to be—deserves attention. Her children deserve answers.”

Fifer’s children are now in the care of relatives as the family begins to process an unimaginable loss. A candlelight vigil is being planned for this weekend in her honor, with community members expected to gather in prayer and remembrance.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains active and that evidence is still being evaluated. No formal charges have been announced at this time.

Anyone with additional information related to the incident is urged to contact local authorities or CrimeStoppers of Memphis.
