GLENWOOD, IOWA — A violent and tragic series of events unfolded in Glenwood Wednesday evening, leaving two people dead, one critically injured, and a home destroyed by fire in what authorities describe as a targeted and isolated incident.
Police have identified the suspect as Dennis Burrell, who is believed to have fatally shot two individuals, wounded another, and then intentionally set fire to his home on North Grove Street.
Gunfire and Flames Rock Quiet Glenwood Neighborhood
At approximately 7:56 p.m., Glenwood Police officers, alongside deputies from the Mills County Sheriff’s Office, responded to an emergency call regarding an active shooter situation at 409 North Grove Street.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a horrifying scene: multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds and a residence rapidly being consumed by fire. Emergency crews worked urgently to secure the area and contain the flames.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim was transported to a nearby medical facility in critical condition. Authorities have withheld their identities pending notification of next of kin.
Suspect in Custody, Community No Longer at Risk
During a late-night press briefing, Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen confirmed that a person of interest, identified as Dennis Burrell, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Johansen emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
“This was an isolated act of violence. We have the individual responsible in custody and the situation is under control,” Johansen stated.
He commended the swift and coordinated response by law enforcement, noting that several officers were attending a community event just blocks away at the time of the shooting and responded within moments.
Witnesses Describe Explosions and Gunfire
Local residents reported hearing a combination of gunfire and a loud explosion just before flames engulfed the residence.
“I heard what sounded like fireworks or gunshots—then suddenly a boom, and the house was on fire,” said one neighbor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
One witness told Channel2 NOW that Burrell had reportedly shot and killed two people inside the home before setting it ablaze. Investigators have not yet confirmed those details publicly.
Investigation Ongoing with State and Local Collaboration
The investigation remains active, with agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) assisting Glenwood Police and Mills County deputies in processing the crime scene. Authorities are conducting a full forensic sweep of the burned property.
“This was a tragic event that required a complex and rapid multi-agency response,” said Johansen. “We’re grateful for the assistance from the Iowa State Patrol, DCI, and our neighboring law enforcement partners.”

Police cordoned off the area surrounding the incident, including Elm Street and North Myrtle Street between 4th and 5th Streets. Those closures are expected to be lifted by Thursday morning, pending completion of investigative work.
